Your Black World Reports
On a recent appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, President Barack Obama was asked about the birth certificate issue. The president recently released his birth certificate to the public in order to squash growing controversy about his birthplace.
"Why did you wait so long, though?" Oprah asked. "When it first came up, were you thinking, I hope I was born here?"
The president noted that his primary objective was to put the matter behind him so that he could focus on more important political issues. He referred to the birth certificate matter as a “sideshow” that distracted the nation at a very serious time.
"I said to my team, look, even though this is not usually what the state of Hawaii does," President Obama said, "even though the Republican governor of Hawaii, the Democratic governors of Hawaii, all the various officials had confirmed that I was born here, let's ask them for a special dispensation where they will go ahead and provide us with the original to see if we can put this to rest."
The Birther issue gained momentum after leading Republican Donald Trump went onto several talk shows arguing that he’d found “interesting” evidence that President Obama wasn’t born in the United States. A recent poll showed that 25% of Americans, and the majority of Republicans don’t believe President Obama was born in this country. Many have argued that the controversy is partly driven by racism.
