During the conversation, I had a revelation: Most of us are just a step away from being incarcerated, or have yet to understand what it truly means to be free. Sure, the US incarcerates more of its citizens than any country in the world, but it might be deeper than you think. </p> <p>The United States Constitution doesn’t abolish slavery for everyone. Actually, if you’ve been convicted of a felony, the 13^th Amendment actually says that it’s OK to force one into slave labor (<a href="http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/ourdocs/13thamendment.html">please go take a look</a>). In an effort to increase minority representation in its ranks, the group has elected an African American pastor to become First Vice President. This is the first time in the group’s history that this move has been made. </p> <p>Rev. Fred Luter Jr. was the man selected for the post, elected on Tuesday to help run the nation’s largest Protestant denomination. The group is seeing declining membership levels, and in response, has been working to bring minorities into the fold. Executive Committee President and CEO Frank Page has admitted that there needs to be “measurable information” to help the Southern Baptists evaluate their progress on race relations. </p> href="http://www.alternet.org/rights/151108/why_the_democratic_party_has_abandoned_the_middle_class_in_favor_of_the_rich/">In this recent magazine article</a>, the author provides a fairly detailed timeline of how and when they feel that the Democratic party (still considered by most of the general public to be the “party of the people”, and more interested in working for the interests of the poor and middle-class) lost its way and became more similar to the Republican Party in its subservience to the super-wealthy and corporations.&#160; </p> <p>Although I won’t go as far as some and say that there are no differences in the two major parties, especially on social issues, increasingly the economic policies put forth by the Democratic Party largely serve the interests of the business community and wealthiest 1% of the population. Democrats increasingly do just enough to make sure that they are able to get enough votes to maintain their seats. Take for example the extremely watered-down health care reform bill. Despite all the raucous debate surrounding it, the final product is a shadow of what could have been given the fact that Democrats held the presidency and both houses of Congress. Is it better than nothing? Yes, but that should not be the standard when you are in control, and when you claim to represent the interests of everyday working people.</p> <p>The question that goes unanswered is this: What are the alternatives? If, as the author suggest, the Democratic party had no choice but to run to the super wealthy and corporations for support given its loss of a base with labor unions, what new or other base can come along to change that? There is mention of the fact that Black people have consistently been the most loyal voting block to the Democratic party, however is this continued loyalty the best plan of action given the ever graduate from high school. In an effort to reverse this crisis, Florida Memorial University (FMU) President Henry Lewis III, along with other university officials will launch the first <b>2011 High School Black Male Baccalaureate Service </b>on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 5:00 pm. The event strives to honor extraordinary Black male students who will graduate from high school. It will take place at the Lou Rawls Center for the Performing Arts on FMU’s campus.</p><a name='more'></a><p>“In my Vision 2020 plan, we embrace a ‘Communiversity’ philosophy that merges needs and concerns of the community with the university,” Lewis commends. “We need these young men more than ever. They are our future leaders. They are indeed my heroes.”</p> <p>FMU invites the community to congratulate the young men on their achievements and honor their cultural heritage. The program will also encourage the young men to continue their education.</p> <p>“I refuse to believe the notion that ‘not all people’ are college material,” exclaims Kareem Coney, director of FMU’s Black Male College Explorers Program (BMCEP), which boasts a 100-percent high school graduation rate. “We have the opportunity to expose these young men to the resources that will help them achieve upward mobility and become successful contributors to their families and communities.”</p> <p>Ninety-eight percent of BMCEP’s graduates earned college placement. Before the day starts here in England I wanted to say a few words about the devastating storms that we've seen in Missouri and Minnesota and across the Midwest.</p> <p>Like all Americans, we have been monitoring what's been taking place very closely and have been heartbroken by the images that we've seen in Joplin, Missouri, in particular. The devastation is comparable and may end up exceeding some of the devastation that we saw in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, just a few weeks ago.</p><a name='more'></a><p>So far we know that over 100 people lost their lives. Others remain missing, and hundreds more are injured. And obviously, our thoughts and prayers are with the families who are suffering at this moment. And all we can do is let them know that all of America cares deeply about them and that we are going to do absolutely everything we can to make sure that they recover.</p> <p>These storms often strike without warning, as we saw a little further south over the last couple of weeks. And it's going to be important for us to make sure that we are sustaining our efforts at rebuilding after the news cameras leave. We can make sure that the families and communities upended by these storms have everything they need to pull through. And in that regard, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano as well as I have spoken with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon. We've offered him not only our condolences, but we've told him that we will give him every ounce of resources the federal government may have that we can bring to bear on this situation.</p> <p>At my direction, FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate and Deputy Administrator Rich Serino have traveled to Missouri to make sure our federal government is working hand in hand with state and local officials to give them the help that they need. And on Sunday, I myself will travel to Missouri to talk with folks who've been affected, to talk to local officials about our response effort and hopefully to pray with folks and give them whatever assurance and comfort I can that the entire country is going to be behind them.</p> <p>Now, these storms that came this weekend obviously compounded what has already been an extraordinary storm season throughout the Midwest and in the South. We understand that there are more storms that are forecast today, so the thing I think I want to emphasize more than anything else, it is critical that Americans in affected areas heed storm warnings and take the lead of your local officials.</p> <p>I know that a lot of people are wondering how they'll get through the coming days or months or even years, but I want everybody in Joplin, everybody in Missouri, everybody in Minnesota, everybody across the Midwest to know that we are here for you. The American people are by your side. We're going to stay there until every home is repaired, until every neighborhood is rebuilt, until every business is back on its feet. He also appears to be neutral in the Obama conversation, which makes his point even more relevant.&#160;&#160; His simple, yet poignant statement was something I felt compelled to share with others: </p> <p><em>Maybe I can add some insight as to why many Blacks are reluctant to criticize Obama. I think that many of us feel that he is under constant UNFAIR criticism and are afraid that even fair criticism will be seen as just piling on. We can be compared to a mother who is over protective of her child because the father abuses him. She feels that her child should have someone who accepts him unconditionally. As a result she may spoil the child. It's not right , but it happens. That's how some view Obama. We see people hoping that he will fail. We see people asking for birth certificates, accusing him of being against America, wanting everything he does to go down in flames, etc. So some of us seem willing to 'overlook&quot; his faults.
